MOSCOW, October 8 (RIA Novosti) – Russia’s first Project
885M Yasen-class attack submarine, the Severodvinsk, will complete final trials
in November or December, after which a government commission will decide
whether to adopt it for service with the navy, the United Shipbuilding
Corporation said Tuesday.
Media reports previously said the navy main command refused
to commission the nuclear-powered Severodvinsk over unspecified technical
problems.
The submarine has completed four rounds of sea trials since
May 30, the manufacturer said, adding that all the trials had been a success.
The submarine’s armament will include 3M55 Oniks (SS-N-26)
and 3M54 (SS-N-27) Kalibr cruise missiles and conventional torpedoes, rocket
torpedoes and mines, according to its designer, Malakhit.
The second Project 885M submarine, the Kazan, has been under
construction at the Sevmash shipyard since 2009
K-329 Severodvinsk is a Yasen-class submarine nuclear attack
submarine of the Russian Navy. The construction of the submarine started in
1993 and was first planned to be launched in 1998. However budgetary problems
delayed the construction for years, and it was only launched on 15 June 2010.
Severodvinsk began sea trials on 12 September 2011.The submarine returned from
her first voyage by 6 October 2011.
The submarine began operational service with the Russian Navy
at the end of December 2013. The Russian Navy plans to have two Yasen-class submarines
in service by 2015. Severodvinsk's torpedo-launching systems have been fitted
behind the compartment of the central station.
